If you’re like most people, your Wi-Fi network is the heart of your home’s internet setup. But if it’s not secure, you’re leaving your personal data, devices, and even your internet speed open to unwanted guests. The good news? Locking down your Wi-Fi is easier than you might think.
Start with Your Router
Your router is your network’s front door, so don’t leave it wide open.
First, change the default login credentials. Routers come with factory-set usernames and passwords, and hackers know them all. Pick something unique and strong. While you're in your router settings, turn on WPA3 (or WPA2 if that’s not available) encryption. This keeps your data locked down and unreadable to outsiders.
Strengthen Your Network Name and Password
Your Wi-Fi name (SSID) should be something custom, not the default name your router came with. And don’t name it something personal, like “Johnson Family Wi-Fi”
You don’t want to give any clues about who you are.
As for your Wi-Fi password, make it long and complex. No pet names, birthdays, or “password123.” Think of a phrase or mix of random words that’s easy for you to remember but tough to guess.
Control Who Gets Access
If you have guests over often, consider setting up a separate guest network. That way, visitors can get online without having access to your main network. If your router has the option, you can also enable MAC address filtering, which lets you manually approve which devices can connect.
Keep Things Updated and Hidden
Your router needs updates just like your phone or computer. Check for firmware updates every few months to make sure you have the latest security patches. Also, if you’re feeling extra cautious, you can turn off SSID broadcasting—this hides your network from anyone who’s not already connected.
Every once in a while, log into your router and check what devices are connected. If you see anything unfamiliar, it might be time to change your Wi-Fi password and kick out any uninvited users.
